Thelma Verna Bailey was born on October 19, 1924 in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago to Albert Beckles & Ivy Bridgewater. She was the second of four children. She married Malcolm Bailey on October 18, 1945. The union produced three children: Pamela Corneal, Patricia Bailey and Peter Bailey. Thelma moved from Trinidad to New York in the mid 1960’s. Her children followed soon after.
She worked as a nurse’s aide taking care of babies and elderly people. Her final job was a school lunch helper in NYC Board of Education. Thelos, as most people knew her, was a promoter and catered parties in Brooklyn throughout the 70’s and 80’s in addition to her regular employment.
Gram, as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren, was a vibrant, fun-loving woman who was loved by everyone she came in contact with. Her home was overflowing with family, friends, food, music and laughter on any given day. Some of her favorite songs describe how she lived her life “I run tings” by Calypsonian Short Shirt & “I did it my way” by Frank Sinatra.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents and her two sisters, Carmen Solano and Enid Williams. She is survived by her brother Gregory Carrion and her children: Pamela, Patricia & Peter; In Laws: Stephen Corneal & Rosanna Bailey; her grand-children: Jenine Corneal, Nigel Bailey, Malika Bailey-Vaught, Janelle Irving, Melissa Bailey-Taitt, Joran Corneal, Dijon Bailey, Sean George, Petina Bailey, Maria Francis & Ariel Bailey; grandson-in-law Moshaun Vaught; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces: Jenny Blanche, Lystra Henderson, Lisa Henderson, Giselle Blanche, Keisha Henderson and others; Brother In Law Fitzgerald “Sonny” Williams; Sister In Law: Lorna Carrion; Nephew in Law: Keith Blanche; Great-nephew: Gregory Whiteman and many others including close friends whom we consider family. Special thanks to Merlyn, Shirley, Suzie, Angela, Ruby, and Shirley (deceased) who celebrated Thelma's birthday annually with her.
Thelos will be greatly missed by a host of close loving friends & relatives both in Trinidad and New York but we know she is in a better place. We must remember it is in God’s time not ours.
