Carol May Brown

Carol May Brown transitioned into eternal rest on January 13th, 2023, at Interfaith Hospital. She was the eldest daughter of seven siblings, born in the loving care of Marlene Whilchez on January 31, 1956, in Limón, Costa Rica. She migrated to the United States at the age of 12, initially residing in Brooklyn, New York with her Aunt Edna, and then eventually reuniting with her mother. Carol graduated from Clara Barton High School. She continued her education at CUNY City College, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Social Studies. On October 23, 1980 from her Eastern Parkway apartment, Carol met Kofi and from there bloomed a lifelong relationship. Carol dedicated long hours working for the Human Resource Administration, starting as a Job Eligibility Specialist on August 8, 1988. She was later promoted to Job Opportunity Specialist and retired from that position on March 2, 2021. She helped people all across New York City for 32 ½ years, and developed many work friends and work sisters along the way. Outside of work, Carol enjoyed life with her best friend Yvonne and her cousin Verona. Mom was a lover of music—especially old school Motown, R&B, Reggae and Gospel. She also enjoyed classic movies. Carol, also known as Sèkèrè, took pride in remembering her roots and never forgot who she was. Sèkèrè was very astute with reading and learning history from the African diaspora, as well as enjoying cultural events and festivities. Carol enjoyed nature, and enjoyed relaxing in Prospect Park, walking through the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, where she admired the handiwork of God. Mom in her later years she enjoyed playing Solitaire and spending hours on the porch with her mother. Carol was a dedicated mother to her sons Sean and Karl. She was always involved in their endeavors as well as being protective of them. She accompanied her boys on trips, was instrumental in their education, as well as exposing them to different experiences and opportunities she didn’t have. Although Carol was a private person, she was a compassionate extended mother to the children in the neighborhood, providing advice and solace. She celebrated a lot of her joy vicariously through her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments in life. She is survived by Kofi; sons, Sean and Karl; her mother, Marlene; her grandchildren, Kayla and Heiress; goddaughter, Kemba; brothers and sisters—Marlon, Rosalia, Aneth, Victor, Yvonne, Marcus, Fernando, Ruben, Glen, Eve, Katania, and Armando; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, family and friends. She will be joining her brothers Alberto and Ricardo. May they rest in peace.
