REFLECTIONS OF LIFE Mary L. Andrews-White Mary L. Andrews-White (known as “Sister”) was born in Pinetop, North Carolina on September 6, 1932 to the late James and Effie Battle. She was the second of eight children. Sister was educated in the North Carolina school system. In 1960 she moved to New York where she attended training school for a certified nurse assistant. Sister worked over twenty-five years as a certified nurse assistant before retiring to take care of her mother. She enjoyed her work and loved taking care of her patients as well as her family and friends. She was a natural caregiver and was there for all that needed her. It was Sister’s way to go out of her way for everyone. Working as a certified nurse assistant allowed Sister to buy a home for her family. A home where she cooked countless of delicious meals. Cooking is something that she was passionate about and made all her food taste good. (especially her turkey wings, meat loaf, ham and sweet potato pie.) During her healthier years, she also loved to drive and at times race. She happily shared stories of how no one could handle the curves and outdrive her on the Jackie Robinson Parkway. She often shared in amusement, “I left that other car, he couldn’t catch me.” She had many stories to share. The stories of her life sometimes made you angry, cry or laugh. Sister was very encouraging to all. As a certified nurse assistant she encouraged her family to pursue a career in nursing and by God’s Grace she witnessed three nursing graduations; Sequeya Henderson, Licensed Practical Nurse, Monique Battle, Registered Nurse and Michelle Evangelist, Registered Nurse. In 1986 she joined Royal Light Temple where she remained a faithful member. Sister will be remembered as one that had a heart of gold. She touched the lives of many and will be missed by all. She is predeceased by her father (James Battle) mother (Effie Battle) and 4 sisters (Annie Elizabeth, Lucy Gray, Warlina, and Queens Esther) brother (James Arden Battle) sons (Alton and William) grandson (Kenneth). She leaves to cherish her memories with love: Her husband Walter White, Her loving children, Charles, Mary Blanche, Ruth (Edward), Helen, Carrie; 11 grand kids: Tony, Darryl, Herbert (Lisa), Eddie Jr., Chrissy, LaVert, Shanda, Michelle (Kwesi) Monique, Jermaine, Pam, 2 sisters Effie Ree Battle, Ernestine Johnson (Harvell). Sister also leaves Jayson, a great grand, whom she said gave her the will to live and became her little helper by letting her know when Cal was trying to sneak outside. She also leaves a host of loving great grands, nieces, nephews, and numerous cherished family and friends. She will be deeply missed.
