Known affectionately as Mike, Supreme, Big Ike, and Ike, he brought joy and warmth to all who had the privilege of knowing him. With heavy hearts, we announce his passing on March 18, 2024, at the age of 63, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Born to the late Ruth Bell and James "Pender" Colbert, Michael's upbringing was steeped in love and familial bonds. He attended Wingate High School, later achieving his GED, a testament to his commitment to education and personal growth. Michael was a spiritual man, finding solace and community at the World Of Life Christian Center in Newark, DE, where he nurtured his faith and embraced the teachings of his belief system. His understanding and appreciation of different cultures extended to his knowledge of the Muslim culture, embodying a spirit of inclusivity and empathy. Throughout his professional life, Michael dedicated himself to his work at Eastern State Construction in Wilmington, DE, where his diligence and dedication earned him the respect of his colleagues and peers. Michael's passions were as diverse as they were deep-rooted. An avid basketball enthusiast, he once graced the court himself and continued to find joy in watching the sport throughout his life. His love for literature led him to explore writing, poetry, stories, and jingles, where his creative talents flourished. Michael's gift for writing was undeniable, as evidenced by his success in winning contests and being paid for his craft. Among his many interests, Michael harbored a deep affection for the epic saga of Star Wars, finding solace and inspiration in the fantastical universe it portrayed. However, it was not just Michael's talents and interests that endeared him to others; it was his remarkable character and unwavering compassion that truly set him apart. He was known for his intelligence, his kindness, his humility, and his infectious smile, which lit up every room he entered. Michael will forever be remembered as a connector of people, bringing individuals together and fostering meaningful relationships wherever he went. He leaves behind a legacy of love and camaraderie that will continue to thrive in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Michael is survived by the love of his life and lifelong partner, Bernadette Jackson; his son, Najee Jackson; his siblings, Beverly "Niecy" Colbert, James "Fluffy" Colbert, and Brenda Colbert; sisters-in-law, Brenda Colbert and Hope Mitchell-Colbert, as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, family friends, and colleagues. Preceding him in death were his siblings, Phillip Colbert, Martha Colbert Caceres, Ray Colbert, and Alex Colbert, as well as his nephew, James Colbert Jr. Though Michael, may no longer walk among us, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were touched by his kindness, love, and grace. As we bid farewell to Michael, let us carry forward the lessons he taught us about love, compassion, and the power of connection. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will continue to shine brightly, guiding us along life's journey until we meet again. May he rest in eternal peace.
