In Loving Memory of Newton Augustus Buchner Newton Augustus Buchner was born on December 30, 1938, in Gamboa, Panama, and peacefully departed this life on Thursday, July 16, 2026. Raised in Panama City, Panama, Newton was the only child born to James Edward Buchner and Mary Winnifred Gittens. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mattie Bell Parrish-Buchner, whom he married on December 17, 1980, as well as his stepson, Dean Tyler, and grandson, Hassan Parrish. At the age of 21, Newton left his homeland of Panama to pursue higher education in the United States. He attended the University of Wisconsin–River Falls from 1959 to 1963, earning a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. Following graduation, he proudly served his adopted country in the United States Air Force, where he served honorably for four years achieving the rank of Sergeant. After completing his military service, Newton relocated to New York City and dedicated more than 26 years to Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York, where he served as a Medical Technologist and Clinical Laboratory Technologist. Through his expertise, precision, and unwavering commitment to excellence, he played a vital role in patient care, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues throughout his distinguished career. Beyond his distinguished healthcare career, Newton made an extraordinary impact on the sport of softball as one of the nation's most respected umpires. From 1975 through 2001, he officiated at the highest levels of the game, working nine ASA National Championships, including eight Men's Modified Pitch National Championships. He was selected to call the championship game behind home plate in five of those tournaments—a testament to his exceptional skill, fairness, and professionalism. In 1981, Newton was named New York City Umpire in Charge and later Southern New York Umpire in Charge. In 1992, he became a member of the National Indicator Fraternity, and the following year earned ISF certification in Modified Pitch. His remarkable contributions to the sport were permanently recognized when he was inducted into the National Softball Hall of Fame in 2009, one of the highest honors in amateur softball. Newton embraced life with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for people and culture. A passionate world traveler, along with his wife Mattie, he explored destinations including Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, Hawaii, and his beloved Panama, among many others. They were also proud members of the United Panamanian Veterans Marching Band and the 1st Panamanian Drum and Bugle Corps, maintaining a lifelong connection to his Panamanian heritage and community. A devoted father who believed in supporting young people, Newton served as PTA President at his daughter Christina's high school, generously giving his time and leadership to help strengthen the school community. He loved music, especially the infectious rhythms of Soca, and rarely missed an opportunity to enjoy African street festivals, where he celebrated culture, community, and the joy of gathering with others. He also had a genuine appreciation for great food and delighted in sharing memorable meals with family and friends. His personal mantra, "Nothing is a game, be the best," reflected the high standards by which he lived. That philosophy inspired countless fellow umpires and became a guiding principle for many within the softball umpiring community. Newton along with his wife Mattie was also an avid bowler, participating in the Wednesday Morning Mixed Doubles League and the Negro Bowling Association, where he enjoyed friendly competition and formed lasting friendships. Newton Augustus Buchner leaves to cherish his memory his son, Newton Buchner Jr. (Jennifer) of Mission Viejo, California; his daughter, Colonel Christina Buchner, United States Army; his stepsons, Harold Parrish of Shelby, North Carolina, Mark Tyler Sr. (Roslyn) of Elgin, South Carolina, and Allan Tyler of Coral Springs, Florida; and his stepdaughters, Adele Tyler of Coconut Creek, Florida, and Denise Tyler of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also leaves seven cherished grandchildren: Anwar Parrish (Shana) of Concord, North Carolina; Mark Tyler Jr. (Jeanelle), Daniel Tyler, and Brittany Tyler, all of Brooklyn, New York; Dean C. Tyler of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Seaman Second Class Adrian Tyler, United States Navy; and Kellen Buchner of Antioch, California. In addition, Newton is lovingly remembered by his longtime close friend, Frederico Beumont—a fellow Panamanian, esteemed umpire, and band leader—as well Cicero Jackson for being the families eyes and ears, as well as a host of cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering pursuit of excellence. Newton's legacy is one of service, integrity, leadership, excellence, and love for family and community. Whether serving his country, caring for patients, mentoring fellow officials, supporting his daughter's education, or celebrating life through music, travel, and friendship, he gave his very best. His life stands as an enduring example of dedication, perseverance, humility, and honor. His influence will continue to be felt by those who knew him, and his memory will be cherished for generations to come.
