Rheushawn Bennett

On Friday September 30, 2016, Rheushawn "Shawn" Bennett, 43, was called home to be with his parents, the late Denise Bennett and Aaron Searls. Rheushawn, was born at Kings County Hospital, in Brooklyn New York on December 20,1972. The oldest of three, he was raised in Van Dyke Houses, in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Attending neighborhood schools P.S. 41 & J.H.S. 275, before moving on to Martin Luther King High School and later receiving his diploma from CASBro. Shawn was an avid sports enthusiast. A trait received from his mother, and passed to his son. As a child he loved the days his mom, and grandmother Mary would take him to professional sports events. From WWF matches in Madison Square Garden to the many ball games at Shea & Yankee Stadiums. Growing up he spent the majority of his Saturday's with friends and family, mastering his bowling skills as part of the Van Dyke YC Bowlers league. But basketball would be his passion. You would often find him in local tournaments or shooting hoops in the Sal V. He later hung up his shoes to coach. Shawn devoted many days and hours assisting the coaches and children of The Latin Souls baseball league. There he assisted his children and nephew, but adopted anyone who would listen. Shawn had a long lasting career with the New York City Housing Authority, where he began as a Housing Youth Trainee. He worked his way up to Supervisor of Caretakers in Williams Plaza. A Position and location he truly enjoyed. Bennett, or Mr.B, wasn't only a Supervisor but a counselor, a mentor, and friend to many of his coworkers.. While Shawn, known as Rock, to his close friends was recognized as a hardworking man. He took the time to love his family. His happiest moment was the birth of his son Kayshawn, on October 3, 2000. Followed by the day he married his soulmate Octavier, on July 31, 2016. Rheushawn leaves to cherish him, his wife Octavier Bennett, son Kayshawn Bennett, stepchildren Kayvonne Brown, and Breyana & Tayviyonne Jones, sisters Stephanie Bennett, Tyesha Searls & Michelle Davis, brother in law Felipe Davis. He also leaves nieces, Lyric, Naomi and Saige; nephews, Michael, and Liam a host of cousins, other family and friends.
