Ms. Dorothy McPherson
February 7, 1933 - February 4, 2021
Dorothy Gloria McPherson was born to the late Dudley and Christina Sobers on Tuesday February 7th, 1933. She departed this earth on Thursday, February 4th, 2021. Dorothy attended Franklin K. Lane High School and would later go on to acquire her Associates Degree. Years later she would marry Jeremiah McPherson and give birth to her only child Kevin McPherson, who she adored, but it would not be an easy birth for her. One evening, while coming home in the early stages of her pregnancy she was shot in the stomach by an assailant and nearly lost her life, but she would not be deterred and was determined to have her child despite the risk. In her early years, Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper at a Housing Development. She then went on to work as a bank teller at Chase Manhattan Bank, while also working nights at Elmhurst Hospital Prison Ward. Ultimately, she would work as a Correction Officer at Riker’s Island Prison and retire from there. What many will remember most about Dorothy, is her indomitable spirit. Whether it was dealing with gunshot wounds, prisoners or fighting for what she believed, she always stood by her convictions. Well into her seventies she was serving on committees at Al Sharpton’s National Action Network while marching in the streets with signs chanting “No Justice, No Peace”. This was who she was, a woman always ready to fight for what she believed in and for those she loved. There was also a softer side to her as well, friends and family members would affectionately call her Dotty or Aunt Dot. She was always willing to lend a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen or a helping hand to those in need. No matter the distance or the significance of the event, Dorothy would always be there to show her support. At times that meant being an impromptu judge for her nieces’ and nephews’ dance contests or making her famous fried chicken to bring a smile to everyone’s lips. No matter how late the hour, she would get on a bus or train to check on someone in need. She was always attentive of people’s needs, if she knew you enjoyed something she would go out of her way to get it for you. That was the kind of giving heart she had. Dorothy you will truly be missed. Fare Well Dorothy: Dorothy is survived by her son Kevin McPherson, her three sisters and her brother-in-law. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
