Ms Elsa Ivey

Elsa Zipporah Ivey Elsa Zipporah Ivey passed away at home on Thursday October 28, 2021. Elsa was born in St. Catherine parish, Jamaica, West Indies. Always scholarly and well-read, Elsa graduated from her parish high school in Westmorland and attended nursing school in Kingston, Jamaica. She graduated from nursing school in 1940 and worked at Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) for several years. Elsa married in 1949. Three children came from that union: Maurice, Narda and Bruce. In addition, she raised her niece Claudette from the age of 13. Elsa migrated to the United States in 1958 where she worked as a Registered Nurse at Maimonides Hospital and Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, until her retirement in 1985. Elsa resided at 699 Essex Street in Brooklyn for 53 years; throughout her life she was a devoted Episcopalian and became a member of Saint Barnabas church in 1965. She loved her church; over the years she served on several committees and received awards and accolades for her service. She often said, “My church gives meaning to my life and I enjoy serving my community through the church.” She enjoyed helping others and was always willing to offer whatever was needed to make someone's life easier or better. Elsa enjoyed spending time with her family, loved ones and friends. Her favorite time of year was Christmas and she enjoyed decorating her church and home, attending church services, and hosting a big holiday celebration at home for family and friends. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. Elsa leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Narda, son Bruce, niece Claudette, six grandchildren, (Bruce Jr, Constance, Michael, Nicole, Jamillah, and Joseph Jr), 14 great-grandchildren, 2 grandnieces (Claudia and Mercedes), and a host of other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Maurice and by her siblings Evelyn, Urith, Fay, Reginal, Keith and Vernon Dear Parishioners & Friends, Please find attached/below instructions for tomorrow's 10:00 AM Service at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
