Emma L. Smith

Emma-Lee Smith was born in Buena Vista, GA on June 27, 1931. She was the second oldest child of five children (Myrtice, Evelyn, Rena Lee, and Mamie) born to the late Emmett and Julia Hobbs. Emma and her family moved to New York in 1941, where she attended P.S.25 and later attended Franklin K. Lane High School. Emma was a hard worker, who worked for The New York Telephone Company for 31 years before her retirement.One of her favorite hobbies was sewing. Emma married the love of her life John Will Smith(affectionately known to her as JW) on October 11, 1958 until JW’s death in March 2000.Of that union they had one son, Ronald Gerard Smith. Everyone that knew Emma, knew her as a Lady of Class and Elegance, who loved her family and was family oriented. She was articulate and was known to “get things done”. She had a heart of Gold and was always mothering those in her presence (especially the children of the neighborhood). Always sharing words of wisdom with them. Emma was a member of The Church of Holy Redeemer, Lutheran Church in Brooklyn.As an active member of her church, she was part of the Altar Guild and The Church Council. When she couldn’t attend church any longer her pastor came once a month to visit her and give her Holy Communion. Her health took a turn in August 2016, where she was admitted to Linden Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, then later on admitted to Saints Joachim and Anne Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Coney Island Brooklyn. She was a resident there until she was admitted to Maimonides Medical Center on Thursday, March 29, 2018. On Saturday, March 31, 2018, with her son by her side, holding her hands, Emma took her last breath and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She leaves to mourn; her (“One and Only”, as she affectionately referred to him) Son, Ronald G. Smith; her younger sister Evelyn Herring; two Granddaughters, Courtney Smith and Jada Smith; three nephews, Steven Herring, Kenneth Herring, and Tyrone-Stanley Herring; one niece Corrie Ross and a host of other relatives and friends. Her memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
