Phyllis L. Morris

Mama as we all called her, was a hardworking, strong willed person. A proud Jamaican, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was our matriarch. Born Phyllis Louise Lynch in the district of Cromwell Land St Mary Jamaica West Indies on 5/7/1931. She attended Highgate elementary and then Karen Hall all girl’s high school in St Mary. She was the third child of Nathaniel and Madeleine Lynch a union that produced 4 children 3 whom preceded her in death. She would later marry Ronald Joseph 12/28/1955, their union produced 2 children 1 son Delroy Joseph (deceased 2001) and one daughter Melly Joseph – Clough. Phyllis in her quest for self-reliance and self-sufficiency would first seek employment at the local chocolate factory in St Mary. Several years later she relocated from her native St Mary to Kingston where she began to work as a successful dress maker/Seamstress. With her eyes set on success and having a better life, she would leave her homeland Jamaica subsequently migrating to the U.S in 1968. On arrival in the USA she worked in the hospitality service field for several years and then as a home health aide until her early retirement in 1997. One thing was certain Phyllis worked hard but also found time for fun, often cruising the oceans, planning and attending house parties with friends and family, she knew how to have fun. She was a proud dignified woman who had a passion for life. She had a wonderful keen sense of humor, one that would either make you raise your eye brows or laugh. But I’m pretty sure everyone who is here today KNEW! And would agree, that she was a force to be reckoned with. She was a harsh disciplinarian, in the way she knew best. A gentle Kind giant when you needed her but one who would not be taken a fool! Shortly after 1997 her health began to fail but even with her failing vision she never missed a beat. Her mind intact, her strength remained unwavering. She was upbeat until the end. We will truly miss her presence. She survived by her seven grandchildren, Michelle Nash, Karen Smith, Francis Clough Jr, Ryan Clough, Diamond Clough, Tamicha Montes, and Shakeena Joseph (deceased 1991). And 17 Great Grandchildren Shiyanne Moore, Jahmeke Rodriguez, Shamika Rodriquez, Najee Smith, Kiara Smith, Ryan Clough Jr. Zion Clough, Kaia Clough, Jade Clough, Jahnee Clough, Josiah Clough, Zavier Clough, Angel Malabet, India Montes, Pablo Montes, Zaniyah Montes, and many relatives and close friends. The family is grateful for each act of kindness and the many expressions of love and concern shown during this difficult time. May God Bless each of you.
