Mr. Ulysee Dunbar

~~ Reflections of His Life ~~ In tears, we saw you suffer. Yet, you held to your courage and kept on fighting to the end. God saw you were tired, so He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come to Me, My child.” How sweet it is at evening – after a long and well-spent day – to close the eyes in slumber and rest from the toil of the day! This heavenly rest came for our Champion, Mr. Ulysee Dunbar, at 8:59 PM on November 8, 2021. Mr. Dunbar, son of the late Newler Mae Dunbar Barnwell, was born on October 2, 1929, in Camp Branch (Varnville), SC. In his late teens, he left SC for New York where he enjoyed a well-spent life. After being gainfully employed in a laundry for a number of years, Mr. Dunbar became a truck driver and for more than 60 years, he delivered myriad supplies for various businesses, particularly, those in the food industry. In September 2019, he drove his last mile as a long-distance trucker retiring from Adolph Trucking Company. A man of unshakeable faith, Mr. Dunbar accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He loved singing and sung in various churches on many programs. His love for singing God’s praises led him to singing with the Mighty Gates, in the late 1940s, and continuing with Charlie Story and the All-Stars until his recent illness. An unassuming and gentle spirit personified Mr. Dunbar’s life as he touched the lives of many to whom he was like The Rock of Gibraltar – very solid and strong yet humble and kind. To cherish his life and mourn his passing are his children – Ulysee Dunbar, Jr. of Brooklyn, NY; Deborah Smiley of Pensacola, FL; Lillian Patricia Dunbar, Pamela Ham, Jacqueline Ham, Christopher Dunbar, Nellie Carrington – all of Brooklyn NY; Cecelia Ham-Spellman of Richmond, VA; Sandra Diane Christian and Chandra Marie Vickers of Shepherdstown, WV – one sister, Marian V. Barnwell of Virginia Beach, VA; two sons-in-law: James Smiley and Samuel Spellman; and two daughters-in-law: Sandra Dunbar and Roberta Dunbar. Also, cherishing the impact he had on their lives are 25 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and caring friends – all tributes to The Rock of Gibraltar, Ulysee Dunbar.
